Do you remember your childhood, when you were coming back from school and your mom was baking a cake for your afternoon snack? I would know right off by the wonderful smell coming from the kitchen, and I remember being so incredibly happy. Oh the joys of being young! And my mom wasn't even doing anything fancy. She would make the same yoghurt cake over and over again, a very common traditional cake in France – very similar to sponge cake - that you can customize endlessly, whether it is with apple, orange, lemon, or even chocolate.
Back then, when we were hosting guests at our place, the fancy cutlery and chinaware would be brought out of the cabinets, and even a simple sponge cake nicely decorated would bring a wow effect at the end of dinner. Even better if it was presented on a cake stand, with a glass cake dome to make it more look more precious. Also to protect the fluffiness and taste of cake, it turned out to be pretty handy to prevent us from stealing a piece or two when no one was looking around.
